Starting Over
The Italian Cultural Institute
39 Belgrave Square, London
Starting over - two artists go in search of hope. Rummaging in the detritus of failed past Utopias they hunt for ways of redeeming enough just to manage standing still in the every day. ..
But what is hope? It is the desperately unrealistic projection of our actions into a positive future.
Charles Mason seeks refuge - building structures with the debris of the house and street. Looking for somewhere to dwell the sculptures are almost camouflaged within the things of everyday life as if they themselves wishes to prevent humiliation and harm, to begin again and do things differently this time; to avoid the same mistakes and make things better. The human landscape is the recipient of pity - while human relationships are the target of Mason's hope.
